A. Teaching methods

Shirene T. Cagaoan was my cooperating teacher at Navy Bae Junior High School for the whole duration of my deployment at their school. I got the chance to observe her in her English classes. She handles all six different sections Grade 9 sections.

Before she started the class, usually one student-led them in prayer. Then she checked the students’ attendance, and after that, she asked a few questions to help them remember the previous lesson to students randomly. She continues by outlining the lesson and providing examples that applIicable to daily life.

She applies a communicative approach by discussing and asking questions to make sure every student understands the material. I observe that she does not lengthy: instead, she explains in a simple, understandable, and short style. Not only skillfully taught the topic, but ma’am has ways to grasp their focus and attention to the lesson. She always gives an example to the students which makes it easier to understand the material. I liked when she applied a game during her lesson, for example when she played music and all along the song, the students kept moving a pen to their friend who sat beside them and when the music stopped, the last students who held the pen should answer the question

1.2 Learning materials and innovation

A variety of conventional educational equipment, including textbooks, a slideable whiteboard with marker, a smart TV for presenting PowerPoint, and instructional videos. Also, they have their own mini board to answer the questions using a board marker, who got the correct answer will get points from Ma’am Cagaoan.

1.3 Sources of learning and technology used by the teachers

The teaching resources consist of student textbooks, teacher-made customized materials, also resources from the Internet. For Junior high school grade 9 where I observed and taught, the students using a textbook “Echoes the series 9 : American and English Literature” by Auxilie Arora D. Salvosa.

Assessment

The teacher utilized summative assessment, providing the students with an exercise after she had finished explaining the subject. Before the students take the middle test, the teacher gives a quiz after covering certain aspects of the lessons for a few weeks.

B. Teaching Plan

1.1 Curriculum

The Philippines uses K-12 curriculum, the implementation of the K-12 system began in the 2012/13 academic year, a comprehensive reform of its basic education. A 12-year study term is required in the Philippines, consisting of two years of senior high school, four years of junior high school, and six years of elementary school. Languages, mathematics, science, ICT, physical education, and the arts are among the fundamental disciplines that are required in both elementary and secondary education. The introduction of Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) subjects occurs in Grades 7 and 8, nevertheless.

1.2 Teaching plan related to your major

I made two lesson plans, my first lesson plan is about Speech choir and my second lesson plan is about features segmental, suprasegmental, and oral presentations.

C. Teaching Practice

1.1 Procedures of teaching

Orientation: The teacher asks the class president to lead the prayer. After completing praying, the teacher check for students attendance

Explanation : The instructor uses PowerPoint and the whiteboard to outline the main ideas of the subject matter.

Application (lecture): The instructor would instruct the class to complete an exercise or homework assignment.

Evaluation and Generalization: Teacher asks the student to summarize what they have learned or obtained from the previous activities and review the lesson

1.2 Time management and organizing activities

Activity 1 takes five minutes for opening and praying before the primary activity.

Activity 2 takes about 25 minutes to complete, including a clear and understandable explanation and time for any questions.

Activity 3 would take 25 minutes to do the assessment

Activity 4 would take ten minutes for the students to complete and thoroughly explain and discuss the lesson.

1.3 Classroom management

On Thursday, October 5th, I gave my first instructional demo. I had to teach about speech choir and segmental & suprasegmental features. Due to their performance requirement on Friday, I informed my students about the speech choir. That day, I had five classes. I separated them into two groups and reviewed the material before letting them practice for the performance.

On Monday, October 9th, I conducted my second teaching demonstration. I also had five classes. The information is intended to supplement students' speech choir performances with knowledge of segmental, supra-segmental, and oral presentations. After briefly explaining the subject, I allowed the students to practice in their groups. It makes me glad to watch them working together and encouraging one another when I see them practicing because it makes me proud of them. Since each group has a distinct concept and choreography, it was entertaining to see them practice. Though it is our final day in Baguio, I am sad that I can't attend the show because we have another appointment on Friday.

It satisfies me that students have participated actively in my lesson. The students are lovely to interact with; they are sweet, thoughtful, entertaining, and adorable. While not every class was very engaged in the teaching and learning process, the majority of them showed passion, which makes me very happy.

1.4 Problem-solving while teaching and staying in the designated school

After my first class, my buddy advised me to use my voice because there were more than forty students in the room and she could not hear me well from her seat in the back. After that, I made an effort to explain as clearly as I could.

During my first class, I explained the material and showed the video of the speech choir performance. After that I realized that the best way to help them better understand the material is to first show them the video of the Speeh choir performance, followed by an explanation of the material. So they became more familiar with it and visualized the type of performance they wanted to put on for the audience.
